What killed Nokia and Blackberry?

Nokia failed as mobile business, Blackberry is on its path to become officially a failed business. But, what failed them?

Did not accepting Android failed them?

I don't think so. That isn't the exact reason in my opinion. Because, Apple doesn't use Android and in many areas it is far more successful than Android.

Then what failed these two companies that we can compare with mythological giant which everyone believed that can't be overpowered and still new companies beat them badly at their own business.

Apps.

Apps failed both of them.

More specifically, the lack of apps. When Android began it wasn't as much polished or user friend as iOS. It grew just because it was free at first. After that, it became popular because it had most Apps in its market after iOS.

Nokia and Blackberry's systems weren't terrible. Actually, they were best in their times. Even, Blackberry's OS was popular among the professional users for its high security features. But, none of them had as much Apps as iOS or Android.

After Google launched its own phone, Google Pixel and Pixel XL, we can see one more victim of this problem: Samsung.

I know. Samsung is still a multi-billion dollar business in smartphone markets and its Galaxy series is among the most popular smartphones and one of the few that is able to give some competition to Apple.

But, think of it this way. The only strong front Samsung is left with is the hardware and more or less software tricks that come with every Samsung mobile. Google and other manufacturers will eventually get to a point where they will make similarly attractive and good builds like Samsung, if not better.

But, can you imagine, Samsung being able to launch its own marketplace that achieves even half the success of Apple App Store or Google Play Store? Microsoft has been trying badly on that front using all of its prowess and yet hasn't been successful much.

Thus, Samsung's only strength in building more and more beautiful smartphones that will attract people. Google's start with hardware design is pretty stale at he moment, but when it will catch up with Samsung or Apple, the competition will be at its fiercest.

At the end of it, there will be only two real competitors who we can call Apple to Apple competition: Apple and Google.

Let's look into the future. Let's say, both companies grow their app market to 5 million apps each and are still going but now have so many apps that people aren't attracted by them anymore. In that scenario, whoever brings The Next Big Thing first will be ahead in the game.

Thus, the idea of App Market launched and popularized by Apple, is the culprit who killed Nokia and Blackberry and may take more lives in the future.

Survival of the fittest.

P.S. Nokia and Blackberry, both have adopted Android at last, and so far, haven't seen any impressive results. Let's wait and watch.
