How DNA storage will revolutionize digital storage on smartphones, computers and many more?
So, recently I heard the news about SanDisk releasing 1 TB microsd Card. That's huge. Your camera or devices with SDXC card support will have more storage than an average PC, laptop or mostly anything else. You will never have to worry about storage. And with increasing popularity of 4K and 8K videos, 360 degree videos and Apple's Live photos, all notorious for taking up a huge amount of space, such an SD card is literally a boon not for tech-savvy people but also for average people. That's why, Apple doubled the storage on their devices this years. I mean, we are living in a time, where 256 GB of storage on a smart phone is a requirement. Do you get that? And that's on world's most popular smartphone. Not a brand that makes stuff for geeks. So yeah, we can see that the world is forwarding very fast towards more and more digital space consumption. Just 10 years ago the biggest memory card boasted only 32 GB. Today, an average phone comes with that much memory. Things will only go up from here.
But, how much? And such storage also comes with its dangers. For instance, what if your fully loaded 1TB card gets corrupted beyond repair. All your personal photos are gone forever. And if you are a professional, that might cost some serious money. That's why many prefer cloud storage. Google Photos is a very good option for saving your photos and videos. It offers you unlimited storage as you might know. But, there are also security concerns about cloud storage, though being very scarce instances.
Now, imagine you have a storage system, that is virtually giving you unlimited storage in size smaller than your average memory cards.
Enter DNA storage.
Microsoft is remarkably working on the technology. And here are the impressive numbers that will blow your mind.
Just 1 Cubic millimeter of DNA storage can save up to 1 Exabyte of Storage. That's a BILLION GBs or a MILLION TBs in a single cubic millimeter. Doesn't that feel like Unlimited storage? To put that into perspective, whole google's database is estimated to be around 10 Exabytes with additional 5 Exabytes as backups (YouTube included). Thus, whole Google's data could be stored in 15 millimeter DNA storage cubes. Sergey Brin and Larry Page can carry entire Google in their smartphones if they want to.
Now, what if you chose to buy 1 cubic centimeter of that technology and not just 1 cubic millimeter. Then, that's unimaginably massive storage we are talking about - in your palm.
One more impressive thing. DNA storage's half-life is 500 years. Your storage is safe for at least those many years. On the other hand, an average SD card has average life span of 10 years.
What can beat such a technology? It's like Graphene of storage systems.
Though, as technologies grow up, we will eventually have files with bigger sizes and we will always need more storage. But, I guess storing an Exabyte in a cubic millimeter is already a pretty long term solution.

World is talking about entire companies establishing 1 Exabyte of storage system stored in large rooms, while Microsoft is working on putting the same storage in the grain of sand or smaller and ultimately in your phones, computers and everywhere.
